It is 20 Million at PokerStars and Counting 2009

PokerStars, already the largest online poker website in the cyberspace, has registered its 20th millionth account recently, the latest sign up being a player from Slovakia Republic, in Eastern Europe. To mark the occasion, the PokerStars has awarded the new entrant, a $215 ticket to its marquee Sunday Million as a surprise reward.

PokerStars, against which most poker portals are benchmarked, began its spiral upwards in 2003, when a little-known accountant, Chris Moneymaker, beat all odds to win the WSOP Main Event, defeating the seasoned pro Sam Farha heads-up. This unexpected triumph of an amateur over a professional player had given hope to other low rung players that with a sound game technique, they could manage to beat anybody on their day. Six years on Chris Moneymaker remains an iconic name, an element of inspiration to all budding poker players aiming to make it big in the highest league.

Apart from the qualifying tournaments, PokerStars hosts the Sunday Million that boasts the largest weekly online prize pool, $1.5 million. This $215 buy-in event, with a first prize in excess of $200,000, frequently draws more than 8,000 players from world over.

Other than from being the most patronized poker portal in the web today, PokerStars also has entered into the Guinness Book of Records by hosting the World's Largest Online Poker Tournament organized till date. The $11 buy-in $500,000 guaranteed tournament it hosted attracted a whooping 35,000 players from all over the globe. The start of the tournament also created a world record in itself, of having the most number of players (250,500) to simultaneously play Poker online at PokerStars.

PokerStars also serves as the presenting sponsor of the European Poker Tour (EPT), Russian Poker Tour (RPT), Australia New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT), Latin American Poker Tour (LAPT), and Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT). Further, it plays host to Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP), whose first edition is going to take place next month, and World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP). Another one to watch out for is PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, a sanctioned EPT event.
