The first day of the European Poker Tour stop that was being held in Copenhagen was an exciting day with many of the top poker players that included, Mel Judah, Daniel Negreanu, Thierry van der Berg, and Thor Hansen. We also got a chance to see Sander Lyloff – the EPT Barcelona champion and also Annette Obrestad - the World Series of Poker Europe Main Even Champion. Gus Hansen managed to work his way over after he picked up his Best Live Player award at the Scandinavian Poker Awards the night before.
At the beginning of the day there were 230 players standing and by the end of the day it had lowered to around 170 players. Mizzi was one of the first eliminations followed by Dario Minieri, Nicolas Jedlicka, and ‘ElkY’ Grospellier – the champion for the Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure. All of these top players were eliminated during the first few levels of the game.
Things really started to heat up when Runar Runarsson and Annette Obrestad went head to head. After Obrestad raised on the pre-flop Runarsson decided to re-raise – this forced Obrestad to make the call. The flop showed Kc 4s 2c and Runarsson decided to lead with a bet. Obrestad called and the turn revealed A4d. Runarsson bet once more when the turn was revealed and Obrestad called once again. Runarsson made the bold move to go all in after the river revealed the 6s. It took awhile for Obrestad to decide how to handle things – but she finally called. Runarsson took home the pot after revealing an A-K. Obrestad walked over to the rail in defeat with the rest of the other players.
Another great play was between Mel Judah, Gus Hansen, and Barny Boatman. Hansen managed to gather a rather large pot from Boatman early in the day – but later in the day when it came to facing off Judah he found that it was not so easy to do. During the flop that held Jd 9s 3d Judah decided to lead out and Hansen decided to raise. Judah then made the bold move to go all in – which was only a little bit more than what Hansen had raised. Hansen called and laid down with Kc Js as his top pair. However, Judah proved to be the winner when he laid down with Qs Qh. Hansen wasn’t eliminated during this hand – but it didn’t take him long before he was on the rail.
Ola Brandborn was the chip leader early in the day thanks to Danny Silk. Brandborn went all in after Silk bet on the flop on an eight-high board. Silk was holding pocket tens and Brandborn had Ac 6c. Brandborn’s bluff actually worked to the advantage after an ace was revealed during the river. This move sent Silk to the rail and allowed Brandborn to take the chip lead.
