Casino Royale to Raise Money for Dog-Fighting Awareness
Dog-fighting is not an activity that many people are generally aware of, but it is certainly an activity that has had its share of media attention in recent months. In particular, the arrest of ace quarterback Michael Vick and his subsequent sentencing to 23 months in prison for the dog-fighting ring he was running has really shed light on this topic and the Humane Society has made full use of the horror people felt at that story to push home the point about dog-fighting. The end result was End Dog-fighting, a program that was launched in Chicago and Atlanta to great success and is now being brought to Los Angeles as well.
The Human Society in Hollywood is looking for donations to help with the launch of the program and that is precisely where the poker comes in. Casino Royale is a charity event that is going to be happening in a private residence in the City of Los Angeles on May 9th. The event will be attended by many people in formal attire for $350 a head and the money made from that tournament will then be sent to the Humane Society Hollywood Chapter in order to help them with the costs associated with organizing the End Dog-fighting program in Los Angeles.
Poker Stars is actually a co-sponsor of the tournament this time around and has even gone as far as to donate two $15,000 prize packages for the Casino Royale to use during the festivities. One of those will be going to the winner of the poker tournament that takes place during the May 9th date. In addition to the name brand recognition of Poker Stars, Casino Royale will also be helped along by celebrity poker players such as Vince Van Patten, Greg Raymer and Mike Sexton. Shannon Elizabeth of American Pie actress fame will also be at Casino Royale in 2009.
The main goal behind the Humane Society’s program is to reach out to kids and get them to treat their pit bulls like dogs instead of miniature tanks. The hope is that by educating the younger generation on this issue, the generational cure can eventually be put on the dog-fighting issue.
