Wow, every time that I come across another piece of doom and gloom poker industry news, I am once again reminded how thankful I am that I am just a poker blogger and enthusiast, and that I am not directly involved with any online gambling poker company.
In this week's crash and burn news (at this rate, I'm going to need to create a virtual graveyard to keep track of all the online poker companies that are collapsing), Duplicate Poker has closed its doors. With the slogan "It's Poker, but Smarter," Duplicate Poker was one of the online destinations that still accepted players from the United States. Unfortunately for them, even accepting this group of players was not enough to keep their company alive. Earlier this month, Duplicate Poker sent out a letter to all of their members stating that they were closing down their website. They also posted a message on their homepage, and although it was somewhat different from the email that was sent out to their members, the main reason in both messages for Duplicate Poker shutting down is the "global financial crisis." Even though I wouldn't hold your breath, Duplicate Poker stated that they may reopen their doors in the future once the economy improves.
If you were a member of Duplicate Poker (or simply decide you want to take a look at their website), you won't find much left. In addition to their farewell letter, the Duplicate Poker homepage is left with nothing but a log-in form for existing members of the website. This log-in form allows Duplicate Poker members to check their bankroll, or to request a withdrawal of their remaining Duplicate Poker bankroll. Fortunately, if you happened to forget the password for your Duplicate Poker account, the website still has a link that allows you to reset your password and gain access to your account.
In case you were wondering about the name of Duplicate Poker, it is actually a type of poker. The game of Duplicate poker takes principles from the game of Duplicate bridge and combines them with certain rules from Texas Hold'em (both no limit and pot limit). If you had never heard of Duplicate poker before, you are not alone. It's a fairly new game that came out of the online poker world. In fact, the first time a Duplicate poker tournament was held at an actual casino was not until April 2007.
