200,000 Sign Poker Petition

The Poker Players Alliance is a group that has been involved in the promotion of online poker for quite some time now within the United States. Abbreviated the PPA, they have their hands in a lot of places when it comes to the propagation of online poker within American borders. Most recently, they have created a drive to sign a petition in favor of online poker and have so far managed to get 200,000 people to sign the actual petition.

The wording of the petition calls upon the US government to do three distinct things. The first is to create an exemption for online poker from the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. The second calls for the licensing and regulation of online poker within the United States. The third calls for the government to respect rights that all hold dear, including the right of law-abiding citizens to play skill games on the internet.

Many famous online poker sites and players have thrown their weight behind this promotion in an effort to get as many signatures on the petition as possible. Cake Poker, a site created and hosted by Lee Jones, is a site that has done so through the offering of promotional freerolls to people that would consider signing the petition. Poker Stars has done the exact same thing in recent months, although they also have some of their own team players throwing their weight behind the promotion.

One such example is Greg Raymer, the man that won the World Series of Poker in 2004. He specifically sent out an e-mail that went to the Poker Stars mailing list that said specifically his view on poker. Specifically, it was his view that poker is not a crime and that his right to play skill games on the internet should be supported by the President. The e-mail was apparently well received within the online poker community and it is hoped that other online poker and offline poker professionals will send similar e-mails in support of this latest push to legalize online poker within the United States.
