The 2007 World Series of Poker has come to an end after over a month of one poker game after another. The stakes all boiled down to the final game, with the winner taking the generous $8,250,000 prize. This year’s top winner, Jerry Yang, was crowned this year’s king of poker.
That’s not all that the ecstatic Jerry Yang won, however. An incredible platinum and diamond bracelet was given to him as a gift, as well as a designer watch. Both are considered extremely valuable. Jerry Yang wasn’t the only one to walk away with a large sum of money-the top 9 players all got a big stake in the prize. Second and third place winners Tuan Lam and Raymond Rahm both happily walked out with multi-million dollar prizes.
So what exactly does a guy do with over $8 million dollars? Jerry Yang claims that he has given 10% to the Make a Wish Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, and Feed the Children charities. At 10%, Jerry Yang has already given out almost $1 million to charities. And he didn’t stop there- he sought to rethink his working status. Previously a psychologist and social worker, he decided to put in his 2 week’s notice in. As for his wife, who is a blackjack dealer, she has already quit by Jerry Yang’s request.
For the future, Jerry Yang claims that he wishes to continue his poker career. He has shown interest in becoming a general spokesperson for poker, something like an ambassador. If time will permit, we will see. For he has plans to travel to countries where there is poverty, troubles, and disaster. He has shown interest in becoming a missionary.
But how does a social worker manage to storm the World Series of Poker? Jerry Yang claims that he has only been playing for a couple of years, but he has read books and has educated himself on the sport. This can be apparent in the final round, where he was down on chips at the start. To make up for the big loss in chips, he played aggressively- even bluffing his way to the top of the chip count. Through some good hands and good bluffs, he eventually became the chip leader and won the Series. Not bad for someone who watches poker on TV, reads a few books every now and then, an hits the poker tables at the local Casino part time.
The 2007 World Series of Poker is now at an end, and Jerry Yang has a full year to celebrate his title- the best of the best. He is celebrating one of the biggest returns on investment that anyone can achieve- he paid just $225 for his ticket, and got $8.25 million in return. Poker is a risky sport, but with payouts like that, it inspires thousands of people to try and make it big just like Jerry Yang. Keep an eye out for Jerry in future tournaments- he is going to continue his career that enabled him to help the less fortunate people in life, for which he is very thankful.
