Poker is Not all Luck, I Have Proof

Category: | Date: December 18th, 2009 | 0 comments »

Many people believe poker is a game of luck or chance.  I argue that although luck can take you for a successful run, it is bound to run out as well, leaving any poker player broken and befuddled.  Most true poker players, however, know that if they are indeed on a lucky streak, it might be time to back down, because streaks usually end when we least would like them to.

In the beginning, luck contributes greatly to the way you play the game, and how you win your pots.  You will especially see the face of Lady Luck with inexperienced players checking their way to a made hand take, not really understanding how to properly play their superior cards.  However, a good poker player knows how to take an inferior hand and make it a winner and would rather luck not come into play at all.

Though most spectators see a well played hand and coin it as lucky, there was probably a significant amount of strategy and analysis that went into designing the win.  Knowing when to raise or check, and by how much is a major factor in determining the outcome of a hand.  Knowing when to call or fold is also regularly overlooked as an actual skill that one must learn in order to be proficient at the game of poker.

Indeed luck, or whatever you want to call it, can help win a few hands, but it can’t establish a successful career.  If you are an avid beginning player, but having trouble in the wins department, try to depend less on luck and have more faith in your analytical skills.  You can’t change your luck, but you can improve your odds by mastering the same skills that the best in the world use.  Once you do, you’ll find that luck is no longer necessary
