When you are sitting down to play your first poker tournament, things can seem a bit intimidating. If you stick to basics however, you can certainly deal with the poker tournament in an intelligent manner.
The first thing you should do is make sure you understand all of the poker tournament rules, whether it is online poker or offline poker. There is nothing more embarrassing than losing a pot or even getting kicked out because of something you didn’t even know was a tournament stipulation. At the same time, make sure that you understand how to get to your tournament (either in the online or offline world) and have picked a poker tournament that you can actually afford to play in.
If you are someone that does not have experience dealing in live poker games, you should definitely consider getting someone else at the table to do it for you (people that like dealing consistency will usually not have a problem with this). Of course, in the online world, this is not really a problem since dealing is coded and automatic.
Many people like to come out swinging at their first poker tournament, but discretion is usually the better part of valor in these situations. Examine your table and look at the overall situation before you make your move. That is the way to do things and it is most definitely the way to get to success. Success in poker comes through observation, especially when you are a new player amongst veterans.
From time to time, people will have disagreements about how things should work in the game of poker. There is nothing wrong with settling these grievances at the table in a civilized discussion. You should always be civilized to those sitting around you in the hope that they will return the favor. If someone is really irritating you beyond what is normally expected at a poker game, feel free to complain to the tournament director in order to get that player a warning. There is nothing wrong with doing that if they are really starting to act inappropriate. Some intimidation is to be expected, but there is definitely a line that can be crossed even in the game of poker.
