Beverly Perdue, Governor of North Carolina, passed a bill into law banning the video sweepstakes games statewide, this Tuesday. It has been declared that this bill will come into effect from the first week of December, 2010.
Perdue expressed her concern regarding the need for a well-regulated and unified system in a legalized gambling market, so that anyone who is profiteering from gambling can be stopped. Although the gambling industry officials urged the Governor to veto the bill, prior to signing it into law, Perdue disapproved their suggestion.
In a contrast to this, Governor, Bev Perdue, was the one, who once said in her statement that she has no problems with the legalization of gambling games, if there are ways to regulate these activities properly.
The gambling industry has put forward several major points in front of the lawmakers. The industry has claimed that they are being able to provide around 10,000 jobs across the state. Moreover, since the popularity of video gaming is proliferating like anything, the state government should be open to the legalization of such video games. However, in spite of all these efforts, they were not able to convince Governor Perdue to veto the bill on Tuesday.
However, with the statement by Perdue spokeswoman, Chrissy Pearson, stating that the Governor is open to the legalization of video gaming just one day after she stated that Perdue is not at all endorsing video games in the state, was quite confusing.
It was in the year of 2006, when the General Assembly passed the law against Video poker. Video games and Casino games are much like each other. However, in video games, no cash is given as prizes, but you can win the sweepstakes prizes. According to two of the district court judges, this system of prizing can’t be considered as illegal.
In addition, the Education Lottery clarified that the state can earn $575M in tax interests with the legalization of poker and this definitely can be a great ray of hope, when the state is going to face a $3 billion budget shortage this coming year.
