Gamynia Owns World Poker Tour (WPT)

Category: | Date: August 7th, 2009 | 0 comments »

In a move that has been widely publicized throughout the industry, the World Poker Tour (WPT) has been sold to Gamynia Limited. The company has purchased the WPT for a total over $9 million, at the same time giving up some percentages for revenues earned in the future. It represents a giant amount of money and is easily one of the most mainstream and noticeable sales to have gone on in recent times.

Gamynia Limited made sure that they got quite a lot for that prize however. In addition to gaining full rights to the future of the World Poker Tour, they have also managed to go ahead and gain the rights to the past. All of the intellectual property rights for the World Poker Tour are now under the flagship of Gamynia Limited. Similarly, all of the WPT episodes that have already been shot are now the property of Gamynia Limited as well. This means that just about everything past, present and future about the World Poker Tour would now qualify as an asset of Gamynia Limited.

In one sense, this is certainly interesting. After all, Gamynia Limited has a lot of money and for that reason should certainly be able to do justice in order to keep the WPT going. At the moment, there is not much more to report on their angle aside from the fact that there are many different numbers involved in the sale that are more confusing than anything else.

However, in another sense, it is a little disappointing. After all, the parent company that used to own the World Poker Tour will be taking that $9 million out of the poker industry. Instead of reinvesting it in poker, that company has already released a statement saying up front that they are going to use those funds in order to fund business ventures that are in industries that have absolutely nothing to do with poker.

So, what does this mean for the viewers? As of right now, it probably doesn’t mean that much. The World Poker Tour is in season eight and still going strong. That means that it is probably business as usual even with the new ownership.
