Chris Ferguson and Andy Bloch advances in the 2008 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship finals.Aside from Ferguson and Bloch, other elite poker players who joined the poker challenge are Huck Seed, Jonathan Little, Phil Ivey, Gus Hansen and Orel Hershiser.
Ferguson, Bloch, Seed, Little and Hershiser had made it to the quarterfinal round but only Ferguson and Bloch had advance to the next round. Hershiser, a crowd favorite lost early on but was able to eliminate first world-class players, which include Freddy Deeb, Ted Forrest and Allen Cunningham.
The crowd was quite disappointed by elimination of Hershiser but according to him, he feels proud of his performance in this tournament. As a closing move, Hershiser signed his ball and give it Bloch to the delight of the crowd.
Those eliminated during the quarterfinals received seventy five thousand dollars while those lucky that reached the semifinals took home one hundred twenty five thousand dollars.
It was Huck Seed who first reached the semifinal round. In the past, Seed had also advanced in the semifinals of 2006 NBC Heads-Up but was defeated then by Chris Ferguson. In the match of Hershiser and Bloch, the latter had an easy advantage in the early game but Hershiser draw ahead with A-5 that had bested Q-J combination of Bloch.
But the latter part of the game, Bloch had finally end the run of Hershiser with A-9 pre-flop. Hershiser then later signed his ball and handed it to Bloch to the envy of every collector.
But the most heated quarterfinal game took place between Little and Ferguson. This is the first even appearance for Little while Ferguson had advance in the past two outings of NBC Heads-Up.
In the game, Little had an early lead of the match and had a six to one advantage but Ferguson had managed to fight back with double-ups. Ferguson had pocket nines against pocket fours of Little. In the end, Little’s chip disadvantage allowed Ferguson to grab the win and go straight to semifinals.
The game match between Phil Ivey and Gus Hansen, it was Ivey who had the advantage from the start to finish of the game. After drawing unlucky cards, Ivey finally won the match. During the semifinals, Ferguson had an early advantage against Ivey and after forty minutes of playing time he won the match and will make his third appearance in the NBC Heads-Up.
Meanwhile, Seed and Bloch poker match was relatively close match until Bloch made an edge before the final hand. Chris Ferguson and Andy Bloch received cool prizes and will face each other in the much awaited poker finals.
This poker match is expected to be one of the most exciting matches in the NBC National Heads-Up Finals.
It can be remembered that in 1990’s both Ferguson and Bloch had discovered that they had use same computer simulated techniques to find out the rank of hands needed in heads-up game. Aside from their separate mathematical biases, both players are related in a popular poker site.
