Online Poker Multi-tabling

The majority of online poker rooms now allow players to play many tables simultaneously. This is known in the poker world as multi-tabling. This article will look at typical ways that you can play many tables at once, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of multi-tabling.

How to Multi-table

Multi-tabling can be done in a variety of ways. The most common way is to play many tables at one online poker room. In order to do this most online poker rooms allow you to resize the tables. At Full Tilt for example, you can easily place 6 tables on a regular sized screen. Another way to multi-table would be to keep the normal sized tables and move back and forth between tables using your menu bar. It is also possible to play at more than one poker room at once, although this can sometimes be difficult because different software’s may not react well to each other. Whichever multi-tabling method you choose it’s important that you play at a number of tables that you are easily able to handle.

Advantages

By playing multiple tables you will be able to play many more hands in the same amount of time. This can improve your play by keeping you’re focussed on the game and allowing you to stay patient because you will be getting playable hands much more often. If you are a winning player, playing multiple tables will also likely increase your hourly win rate. For example, if you usually earn $10 an hour playing at one $0.25/$0.50 table, this amount should increase to $40 by playing 4 tables. Even if you aren’t able to earn quite as much per hour at each table because of some of the disadvantages mentioned below, your total wins should increase as long as you aren’t playing so many tables that you can’t keep track of them all.

Disadvantages

There are a few disadvantages that come with playing many online poker tables at once. One disadvantage would be that you have a greater chance of making mistakes. You won’t know your opponents as well at each table so you may make some wrong decisions that you wouldn’t have made if you were focussing on only one table. Also, by moving from table to table you may sometimes click the wrong button or not have enough time to bet the amount that you want. If you play too many tables you will also start playing very mechanically and you won’t take into account your opponents or the previous play in the hand when making decisions. When this happens you become very easy for your opponents to read, which will likely turn you into a losing player.

Overall, multi-tabling can be a very useful tool for winning poker players to increase their hourly rate, but at the same time, it is important to not play at more tables than you can handle and to continue to focus hard and make smart decisions taking your opponents tendencies into account.
